My first taste of agency life at Emota

As my first experience in a corporate company, I was both nervous and excited at the prospect of this opportunity. Those nerves were quickly put to the test as I found myself thrown into the metaphorical deep end, with specialist terminology flying around in almost every conversation. Katie and her team did their best to translate for me, but I still couldn’t help feeling like an impostor in their world at first.

First impressions

By the time I went into the London office on Wednesday and Thursday, I already felt much more comfortable with the new language. Being in the office made a huge difference, as it gave me the chance to socialise more, ask questions and satisfy my curiosity about how the company really works.

The London office itself has such a wonderful aesthetic, creating a friendly and personal atmosphere that’s amplified tenfold by the people who work there. Everyone was willing to make time for a conversation, even amongst their own busy schedules, and made me feel incredibly welcome from day one.

Getting stuck in

Every day brought new meetings, new people and new opportunities to learn. It didn’t feel like a typical work experience placement; instead, I felt genuinely integrated into the company’s day-to-day work. The tasks I was given helped me build a much better understanding of how the different parts of Emota work together.

Throughout the week I worked on a range of different projects. One involved responding to a creative brief for an upcoming event, where I had to consider everything from the venue and mandatory requirements to audience needs and key statistics. I also carried out a competitor analysis, researching other agencies, comparing their marketing strategies with Emota’s and identifying what the company could potentially learn from them. Finally, I completed a writing brief that was tailored to my interest in studying English and Philosophy at university, creating a sales pitch aimed at senior marketing teams. I really appreciated that the team took the time to adapt the task to my own interests.

Learning from the team

Alongside these projects, I had the chance to meet with professionals from across the business to learn about their roles and career journeys. I found it particularly insightful to sit in on internal meetings, listening to how ideas were developed and how projects evolved through collaboration. One meeting that really stood out explored behavioural psychology and how it can be combined with colour, imagery and emotion to shape effective marketing.

Looking back

This work experience has been an amazing opportunity. Before joining Emota, I wasn’t sure what to expect from life inside a marketing agency. I’ve left with a much clearer understanding of how creative ideas, strategy and collaboration come together, and I’ve learned so much in just one week. Most of all, I’ve come away feeling inspired about what a future career in this industry could look like.

Thank you to everyone at Emota for making me feel so welcome and for giving me such a valuable experience.
